This is the latest specification for the v=spf1 record syntax and semantics. It was published on 2005-06-06, has undergone IESG review, and is currently in the RFC Editor's queue. It is expected to be published as an Experimental RFC in 2006.

Historical editions of the specification

SPF has a long history reaching back to mid-2003, when it was created as a spin-off from one of Gordon Fecyk's DMP drafts. In December 2003, the first stable SPF draft was released. Since then, a number of editions have been released, differing mostly in details, and leading up to the final specification, draft-schlitt-spf-classic-02.
